While I have only been a member of CCCKC (CowTown Computer Congress Kansas City) for a few months, and haven’t been involved with any noteworthy projects yet, it has been one of the best things I have done in terms of community involvement to date.
The list of active projects(makerbot, warzone, jaydoc to name a few) for our hackerspace is currently amazing and growing. I have seen talks ranging from basic electronics to a multi-part Cyber Security session. Every person I meet has something interesting to contribute and being surrounded by hobbyists is certainly inspiring.
It’s also underground, in a cave. Which is pretty sweet.
Check here to see if you have a hackerspace in your area (or U.S. list only). Then GO JOIN IT! If you are in the Kansas City area, or anywhere close. We currently meet every Thusday in our 1400 square foot facility deep within a cave complex located at3101 Mercier, Kansas City, MO USA. Meetings start at 7pm and are open to all those interested.
If you are nervous at all, don’t be. It may seem scary at first, but being locked underground in a cave with a bunch of strangers is awesome.
Update: I forgot to mention, that being a member of a hackerspace gives you access to the family. I’m not saying you are a member of every space, what I am saying is you are welcome at any space you want to stop by. We have had visitors from NYC Resistor (Zach Hoeken demoed makerbot), pumpingstationone, and a few others. Additionally CCCKC members traveled to geekprom. It truly is a wonderful community.
